Michigan’s Opening Day

Mike's First BuckOpening day here in Michigan has been one of those days that should be a State holiday. Men and Women take the day off from work to put on the blaze orange vest and hit the woods with the anticipation of seeing that monster buck. Our brother Mike Kreiner at 18 has been around my brothers and I since the start of our local QDM co-op. He had seen the numerous bucks that we have passed year in and year out which made him selective on what type of buck or deer he was willing to take. We all carry our cell phones so we can be in contact throughout opening day on what our deer sightings are like. Joe and Mike were texting about a buck that Mike had bedded at only 40 yrds. When questioned what it was he indicated that it was either a 6 or 8 point. Joe and I being in the stand together to film our mornings hunt asked why he wasn’t shooting it. Turns out the buck was facing dead away from him preventing him from making an ethical shot so he chose to be patient. About 30 min passed the buck quickly got up to start chasing a doe. It didn’t take long before the buck came back this time closer to Mike presenting him with a 25 yrd shot. Joe and I heard the shot ring out at 9:30am with a text that followed shortly after “Buck Down”. The 12 ga. rifled slug anchored the buck where he stood. Joe and I quickly packed up our setup to go celebrate with Mike on his first buck. Mike has passed on several bucks in years past and he finally found a buck that he was happy with. He has learned that you do not have to shoot every deer you see but enjoy the outdoors and the stress relief it provides. Congrats Mike on a great buck!!
