Hunting Reports

10/18/10 – The bucks are running!!!  Friday evenings hunt we watched a decent 2.5 year old buck chasing a doe around and making scrapes.  A very nice buck that we’d like to see make it into next season.  Saturday morning we had a good 3.5-4.5 yr old buck come through at 50 yards running a doe but was just outside of bow range.  He showed up again Sunday evening at 40 yards.  Stopped him and settled the pin for a double lung shot and between the flinch and the buck jumping the bow string, the arrow sailed clean over his back.  Quite the heartache when you know you don’t get many chances for a deer like this in Michigan.  With a lot of season still left in front of us we can only hope that he will show himself again so we can redeem ourselves!!!

10/07/10 – Just finished editing the second video from our opening weekend in Antrim County.  We had only been on the stand for 15 min. when deer started showing up in our rye and clover plot.  Joe Kreiner made a great shot which required no trailing.  Deer went down within site.  Below is the video of the hunt!!  We leave again tomorrow morning for Antrim County to meet up with some family from Florida in the hopes to put them within range of some Whitetails.  Look for those videos next week!!  Enjoy!!

10/05/10 – We are now 5 days into Michigan’s Archery season which has started off great!!  We headed up to Antrim County, Michigan for the opening weekend and I started off by putting a doe down on film opening morning.  The deer movement was very slow to start but after sunrise the deer started working into the corn plot and finally worked into position to offer me a 25 yard shot.  My shot was a little high and a little back but this deer didn’t go far.  Below is the video of this hunt.  I will be posting another report in a couple days with my brother Joe’s successful hunt also on film.  Enjoy!!

09/28/10 – Only 3 days away from Michigan’s Bow Opener.  Got reports of a few good bucks taken during the Youth Hunt weekend and several does.  The deer population on most private property in Southern Michigan is booming.  There are way to many deer and not enough hunters doing their part in reducing the doe herd.  With the help of new deer management co-op’s throughout the state we are beginning to see an increase in the quality of our deer however everyone seems to hold off shooting a doe until the end of the season and usually don’t get an oppurtunity to fill their doe tags.  Let’s do our part and help reduce our Michigan’s doe herd.

It looks like the corn and beans are coming off much sooner than last year.  I predict a majority of the fields will be combined by the 2nd-3rd week of October so that will give those deer a few less places to hide.  I also predict we will be seeing more rutting activity due to the fact the deer will have less cover.  Mark the last week of October and first week of November down for the primary rutting phase.  Deer will be going nuts!!

We will be out October 1st in Antrim County looking to reduce the deer herd on our property in the Northern Lower Pennisula.  I will be sure to report our progress as our season gets underway.  Good Luck and be safe!!
